You Died is an immersive solo soulslike TTRPG created for the Caltrop Jam 2 using the Caltrop Core system. It has an estimated playtime of 2-3 hours and can be replayed multiple times. The game is currently in early development and feedback is widely welcomed.

You are an Unearthed, born from tainted soil at the foot of the deceased Giant King Kohln. The putrid Kingdom of Kohlnren lies above you, carved from the giant’s decaying form. It is the fate of all Unearthed to ascend through the body of the Giant King and to claim the Rockskull Crown, taking rule over the Kingdom of Kohlnren, lest they rot into the earth once more. Countless try, few succeed. Shall you become the new Rockskull Monarch?

What you need: A d4 die, a pack of 52 regular playing card, a pencil, a sheet of blank paper, (Optional) some d6’s to keep track of game resources, (Optional) determination.

First you construct your character, choosing which of the primary statistics you wish to level into and gain your crude starting weapon. Then you construct the Kingdom of Kohlnren for your run, randomising the encounters and bosses using a pack of cards.

You must fight your way through three acts, each culminating in a boss. Slay the final boss at the end of Act 3 to win the game!

Content Warnings: Blood, bodily fluids, body horror, body parts, bones, cannibalism, death, decay, eldritch monstrosities, insects, rats, snakes, weapons, violence.

The game is amazing! Epic and with an inmersive narrative :)

I have one question about bosses tho In a regular enemy phase, we choose between dodge and parry. Is it the same with the bosses? Or they just randomize their attacks and the player does not have the chance to dodge/parry?

Also, can one weapon be upgraded more than once?

Just finished a first playthrough! It took a few sittings. I'm definitely going to come back for another sometime, now that I have a better sense for the flow of the game! The writing was great, I got to hang out with Rascel and everything was fine and we were just such good friends. Pals. The NPC storyline was a highlight! I'd have loved more flavor for the bosses--beating the final boss was satisfying mechanically but lacked the narrative flair of the final NPC encounter, which in my run had happened immediately prior to the fight.

I'm thinking I'll make the following modification in future runs:

Parry. Roll one d4. On a 4, you successfully deflect the attack and deal a Critical Hit to the enemy. On 2 or 3, you must try to Dodge but roll one fewer die. On a 1, you must try to Dodge but roll two fewer die, or one die, whichever is lower. If you have no dodge die to roll, the enemy automatically scores a Critical Hit.

Just to up the cost of parrying  little bit, mostly at the upper levels. I found myself pretty frequently rolling 1's to parry but still breezing through on endurance alone.

Thanks for a great time! Loved the atmosphere and the art.

Love this and would love to see a printable character sheet to fill in.

This is a challenging yet fun RPG with some very cool worldbuilding you encounter along the way. While it took me a playthrough to really get some mechanics, there is enough replayability to venture in for a second, third, fourth...adventure! I enjoyed the bleak mood of this game and although I'm not usually a glutton for punishment, this made me feel like I was accomplished at the end. Highly recommend!

Played through one epic quest, then went right into another.  I'm sure I'll visit this world again some day.  Great game!

Nice game, but please if possibile make a video explaining the rules Better cause its a Little confuse.

I play It my way.

-enemy starts the combat(It means i Just start playing Rolling Two dice 1normal die, and another for the bonus granted by the equipped weapon.

-enemies deals damages. The card vales would be the half damage example 3 its 1.5 of damage.

Enemies from 1 to 6  doesnt have faction habilities, does It? Only Bosses.

And so on. Thanks a lot.

Just had an epic death in Act I and boy is it awesome!

The mechanics are easy to follow yet allow you a myriad of choices:
do I heal, do I camp, do I push on, should I switch weapons?
I legit jumped from excitement when I managed to crush an ambush as I chose to push on with 1 hp.

Each faction and NPC has flavor, the bosses are unique and have the perfect amount of souls style to be challenging but allow the story to unfold.
I caught myself picturing the battle and narrating to myself:
"I parry your attack and cut your belly open and you are close to dead my friend" clenching the weapon I found 3 encounters earlier.

And the replayability is endless.
But I shall stick to Hagmar until he climbs the top.

An excellent game to play while you sit in your comfy chair, only to be on the edge of the seat 2 minutes later, screaming at the dice, and cursing your choices.

10/10

This looks so dope, I’m a sucker for Souls like games and I can’t wait to try this!

I suppose I have to print those cards, right?, sorry Im not into TTRPG games, is that necessary? Cause I would😤✌

It uses a standard deck of 52 playing cards. No printing needed if you've got one lying around!

Hey, couldn't find a forum for this game, so i figured I'd ask here. So, I'm setting up my map and there doesn't seem to be enough encounter cards for all of the acts, I've read through the instructions a few times, but couldn't figure it out. if anyone could help out I'd appreciate it. Thank you

Heya! So you should have a total of these cards in each act:

Act 1: 1x Jack, 1x 10, 1x 9, 1x 8, 1x 7, 4x 2 or 3 (randomly chosen from encounter pile).
Act 2: 1x Queen, 1x 10, 1x 9, 1x 8, 1x 7, 4x 2 3 or 4 (randomly chosen from encounter pile, you should have just shuffled the 4's into this pile).
Act 3 (first half): 1x Jack, 1x 10, 1x 9, 1x 8, 1x 7, 4x 2 3 4 or 5 (randomly chosen from encounter pile, you should have just shuffled the 5's into this pile).
Act 3 (second half): 1x King, 1x 10, 1x 9, 1x 8, 1x 7, 4x 2 3 4 5 or 6 (randomly chosen from encounter pile, you should have just shuffled the 6's into this pile).

I hope that helps!

I can't believe this is pay what you want. While there are some PDF features I'd like (clickable table of contents for example), this is a full game that really captures the spirit of FromSoftware games. I look forward to the "complete" version.
